Phish - February 23rd, 2020

Towards the beginning of the jam, Trey sustains a note, which Page takes as a cue to introduce soaring harmonic counterpoint, including a hint to a major mode shift; this wrangles back to the "Everything's Right" theme. 11:30 sees Trey and Mike introduce a new chord vamp, and this yields a patient and smooth segue into major key bliss jamming by 13:45. Page builds with Fish's, and Trey goes whale call while building off of Mike's harmonic counterpoint. A pleasant feedback- and piano-dominated peak builds, climaxes, morphs, and finally reaches a graceful conclusion at 17:45.

Although the composed section is a bit rough, the jam opens up much more than most recent versions. Moving into major mode around 5:45, the jam then modulates back and forth several times, adding texture. With some nice Page/Trey interplay, Fish and Mike keep the rhythm at a good clip with building intensity. Nice to see this oldie get some love!

Departs "Simple" with an "Under Pressure" tease and smoothly coasts through multiple short-lived grooves before another tease ("In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida") sets the table for the final climb.

The second half of a deadly 1-2 punch with "Simple". Immediately moves into a bouncing calypso-y shuffle as Fish takes point and Page goes to work on the clavinet. The jam settles down and gets more funky as Fish taps away on his woodblock, Trey in particular laying down some thick nastiness. They then move into soaring anthemic territory, then as the jam dies away a darker and more unsettling mood takes over thanks to Page's synths and Trey's effects. Trey utilizes a guitar line very similar to Chest Fever to fine effect, much as he did in the 8/3/18 "Carini". Tremendous version.

-> from "Undermind." The end of the song proper features a heavy dosage of"Simple" teases which give way to some stellar, driving play from Fish. The upbeat jam takes an ambient turn, featuring some growling effects by Trey and eventually > into "Passing Through."
